The 1949 Ford was the first new postwar model brought out after the reorganization of the company by its new chief, Henry Ford II. His grandfather Henry Ford had passed away at the age of 83, in April, 1947.
The model year production run was 1.12 million cars. A 'low end' model such as our four door, six cylinder Custom cost about $1400.00 new; I believe father paid about $950.00 for this one year old in 1950. That comes to about $6000.00 in 1999 U.S. dollars. The exact date when this car was sold by my father escapes me now, but it was some time in 1956 when he ordered the first Volkswagen. By that time I had several thousand miles of driving experience on this vehicle. I had also seen my first Porsche 356 and then decided that was the car for me.
