On 25 June 1876, General George Armstrong Custer lost his golden locks to the Lakota (Sioux) on the grass hills along the Little Big Horn River, a short distance north of here. Earlier in his carreer, the 'Boy General of the Golden Locks' from Monroe lead the Michigan Cavalry Brigade in holding off the Confederate cavalry (J.E.B. Stuart and Fitz Lee's First Virginia) from Meade's rear at Gettysburg, PA, 3 July 1863. |
