EDITORIAL EMINENCE

ribbonEeleomosynarianism vs. Capitalism - Long
Posted by John Cochran on Saturday, 9 May 1998, at 12:29 a.m., in response to Your thoughts / Archive - Storage / IMPORTANT, posted by Porsche Pete on Friday, 8 May 1998, at 11:37 p.m.

Pete: I just imagined that you flunked the Bill Gates Marketing Course. Bill has the inate ability to keep everyone dangling between DOS, 3.1, Win95, Win98, NT and who knows what else. We all hang on his every most recent pronouncement and operating system offering to help him build his Seattle pyramid. Where the hell were you when study hall began? Here Bill is getting rich and you are carping about too many customers. What's the difference? Well, Bill charges for his product. You give yours away free and modestly request financial help. Hint. Hint. Hint.

See if you can log on to www.counselconnect.com for free, or the WSJ, or the NYT. Alexander Graham Bell probably gave his services away for free for about a year or two. Hint. Hint. Hint.

How in the heck do you live a family life, run your real estate business and operate this board? Those of us that love your site must surely feel a great deal of compassion for your family. While we take our families to Europe to visit Zuffenhausen, you stay in North Carolina to administer the PPBB. While we drive our Boxsters, your A4 dutifully hauls eager buyers from house to house. That is not fair to you, your family or your business.

Turn the damn computer off if you don't want to charge! In February of this year, you said you sent your first post from this Board to your printer: The Donner Pass Post, I called it. I meant every word I said in February and every word that is repeated here.

We all toasted you, Dane, CFG, Berkeley, Mark C. and others that help keep this Porsche promotion on the WWW. But it is obvious that there is not a single dealer in the USA that is willing to underwrite your efforts. Granted Chris Huck in San Diego has contributed a sponsorship. But where are the rest of the dealers and especially PCNA? They are at the bank, reaping the benefits from the seeds that you and others like you sow. If this is going to be a hobby, you simply cannot allow the masses to dictate the board. Don't ask us if we want 4,000 archives. Simply cut them off because you don't have time to fool with them, keep the site up, and take care of everything else that is or should be near and dear to you.

Prom will be coming up soon. So will the trip to the college to get that dorm room just right. You have to plan for these things that are far more important than a bunch of us that are willing to contribute a few pence to help. Economic considerations aside, don't fall into a trap that I did about fifteen years ago where running and the marathon began to dominate my life, my wife and everything else around me. I don't know what this sort of philosophy portends for the internet, but I do know that you must be a super guy that is totally overwhelmed by the committments you have made to the Porsche Pete Boxster Board.

Whew! Enough said. Forgive me, please.
