TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

ribbonPainted Wheel Crest Procedure and Tips
Posted By: JohnB on Saturday, 22 August 1998, at 1:11 p.m.

To paint your wheel crests here is what you need;

1. Small size Testors Gold paint
2. Large size (doesn't come in small) Testors Gaurds Red paint
3. Testors multi pack brush set w/ fine point brush
4. Testors clear coat (spray)
5. Some solvent, I used Naptha
6. A old clean toothbrush
7. A small rag

Preparation;

Clean the crests well. Use the solvent in a prep wipe to get a good stick.

A few tips:

1. Shake the gold paint extremely well. While using recap and shake after 3-4 brush dips. The metallic nature of this paint sticks much better if it is freshly shaken.

2. Using the fine point brush start with the gold, paint the center, then the top PORSCHE, then either of the side clusters. This is important for a few reasons. The center is the hardest. If you mess up (and you will) simply dip your toothbrush in solvent a few scrubs and a wipe and you are back to the start. Additionaly, this pattern will have your missed brush strokes most likely hit other Gold painted areas.

3. Paint all the centers first, then set aside. Paint all the Porches etc. The reason is if you allow the center paint a few minutes to set up, it makes doing the other areas easier.

4. Using the round robin technique you should be done with all the Gold. If not intially perfect no sweat. Put in a warm place (I used the top of the hot water heater) for 5 minutes. You'll need a break and the Gold will set up.

5. Now your ready for the bars,Using the wider bush, start at the top and paint from the middle to the sides. The middle area is were you really have to be precise and with the wider brush it is harder. You need the wider brush here to get a better stroke of paint.

6. The last bar, which is a partial, use the fine point brush (cleaned in solvent). The wide brush is to much a hassle.

7. Allow to dry, touch up a your done.

8. Wait 48 hours, no less than 24 and spray with clear coat sealer.

General, Be patient. Do a few brush strokes and take a 10 sec rest. If you have top scuttle the job with solvent, no problem! When you get it right, no one will know how many false starts you had. Total job is about 1 hour.
