TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

ribbonRear window heat spots and a fix
Posted by Rob Langley on Thursday, 5 March 1998, at 8:38 a.m.

I remember a post on this awhile back. The spots on the rear window. I have had the same problem and it appears to be coming from the engine compartment hold down screws and the heat they transmit to the top. I think I have found a solution. I got some 1/4 inch flexible insulation (R value 8), it is covered with an aluminum skin on both sides. I cut out a round piece approximately the size of the hold down screw (about 1 1/2 inch) then attached velcro to one side and heavy grey felt to the other side. My interior is graphite grey. And presto!!! The plugs, as I call them, fit perfectly over the screws and should protect the top from the heat. The felt color is almost identical to the carpet. Unfortunately I do not have a digital camera but will snap some 35 mm and have walmart digitize it if anyone is interested. Hope this helps. Rob

It is very easy to make it yourself. It takes about 5 minutes and costs less than a dollar. Now maybe if I made it out of carbon fiber and put a Porsche Crest on it.... Yeah that's the ticket. $49.95 or in stainless for $59.95 no problem :-)

All kidding aside. You can probably find the 1/4 inch flexible insulation at a hardware or building supply company. The felt and velcro at a Walmart. Just measure the indent area where the holddown is and cut to fit. Glue the felt to one side of the insulation, leaving about 1/4 inch overlap and stick the velcro to the other side. Attach the opposite type velcro to the hold down screw on the engine compartment and you are done. Photos in about 2 weeks of my plugs.
